Throughout my career, I’ve hired or been involved in the hiring of many people.
Today, through Leaps&Bounds, we have the privilege of helping organizations through executive search, recruitment, leadership transitions, and strategic growth. Whether it’s an executive search, a critical hire, or supporting a leadership transition, one thing I know, recruitment is about far more than filling a vacancy.
It’s one of the most visible expressions of your leadership, your culture, and your brand.
Every interaction a candidate has during the hiring process shapes their perception of your organization. Long before they accept an offer, they’re deciding whether they trust your leadership, whether your values align with theirs, and whether they can see themselves building a future with you.
That’s why choosing the right executive search & recruitment partner matters.
When organizations engage an external partner, they’re not simply outsourcing recruitment. They’re inviting someone else to represent their organization in some of the most important conversations they’ll have with prospective employees.
For many candidates, your recruitment partner is your organization. They’re often the first voice a candidate hears, the person answering questions, sharing opportunities, providing updates, and sometimes delivering difficult news. The experience they create becomes part of your employer brand.
Experience is, of course, essential. Executive search requires thoughtful assessment, sound judgment, market knowledge, and the ability to identify leaders who will succeed not only today, but well into the future. But experience alone isn’t enough.
The strongest partnerships are built on shared values.
Your partner should understand your organization well enough to represent it authentically. They should be willing to ask thoughtful questions, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and act as a trusted advisor throughout the process. They should care as much about protecting your reputation as they do about completing the search.
Like any trusted advisor, they should also take the time to truly understand your organization, your culture, and the kind of leader who will be successful, not just today, but as your organization evolves.
Most importantly, they should never lose sight of the fact that behind every résumé is a person making one of the biggest decisions of their career.
Candidate experience isn’t simply a nice-to-have. It’s an extension of your leadership.
Recently, someone reached out to me to fill a role in their organization. I recognized the name, but I couldn’t remember where from. When we met, she reminded me that I had interviewed her years ago and while there hadn’t been an opportunity, she appreciated the way I made her feel. This was the reason she was calling now. This is what recruitment is all about.
Candidates remember how they were treated. They remember whether communication was timely, whether expectations were clear, whether someone followed up when promised, and whether they felt respected, even if they weren’t selected.
Those experiences don’t stay with the individual candidate. They become conversations with colleagues, friends, and professional networks. They influence how your organization is perceived long after the competition has closed.
There is always pressure to move quickly. Vacant leadership roles create uncertainty, and every organization wants to find the right person as soon as possible.
I believe in working with a sense of urgency, but never at the expense of good judgment.
The goal is to find the right leader while ensuring every candidate experiences a process that is professional, respectful, and reflective of the organization they hope to join.
I’ve always believed the best recruitment outcomes happen when everyone feels they’ve been well served. The organization has confidence that they’ve made the right hiring decision. The successful candidate feels excited about the opportunity ahead. And even those who weren’t selected leave knowing they were treated with honesty, respect, and professionalism.
To me, those outcomes are inseparable. Recruitment is deeply personal. Organizations are making decisions that will shape their future. Candidates are making decisions that may shape their careers.
Our responsibility is to honour both.
At Leaps&Bounds, we believe that aligning people with purpose elevates performance. Recruitment is where that alignment begins.
